- RERC on Communication Enhancement - Conducts a comprehensive program of research, development, training, and dissemination activities to assist people who rely on augmentative and alternative communication to achieve their goals by advancing and promoting AAC technologies and supporting the individuals who use, manufacture, and recommend them.
- RERC on Hearing Enhancement - This Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) develops and evaluates technology to accommodate the needs of people with hearing loss. Located at Gallaudet University and funded by NIDRR.
- RERC on Technologies for Children with Orthopedic Disabilities - NIDRR Rehab. Engineering Research Center (RERC) at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehab. Center that focuses on manipulation (through prosthetics), mobility (through prosthetics, functional electrical stimulation, or wheeled mobility), and play.
- RERC on Telecommunication Access - NIDRR Rehab. Engineering Research Center at Trace Center, Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison. The focus of this RERC is to identify telecommunication access barriers in current and future technologies, identify solutions, and assist industry in implementation.

- VA Centers of Excellence - Each Center of Excellence (COE) develops its own research agenda, is affiliated with a VA Medical Center and collaborates with local schools of public health and universities to carry out its mission.
