R3b. Impact of Environmental Barriers on Outdoor Wheeled Mobility
Project Director: Jon A. Sanford, M. Arch
Co-Investigators: S.Stark, PhD, OTRL & D.Gray, PhD, Washington U.: H. Hoenig, MD, Duke
Timeline: Years 3-5 (36 months)
Specific Aims:
The overall purpose of this project is to identify and objectively measure environmental barriers to participation in the community by
wheelchair users. Specific aims of the project are to: 1) identify, classify, and quantify real and perceived environmental barriers to
wheeled mobility in the community; 2) determine impact of environmental barriers on wheeled mobility performance; and 3) determine the
impact of barriers to wheeled mobility on community participation using objective data from field observations and validated self-report
participation instruments. Project findings will be used to develop technical requirements and guidelines for the design of outdoor
environments that facilitate wheeled mobility and produce information that will be incorporated into the mobile accessibility guide
being developed by the Mobile Wireless RERC.
